How Kids Get Promoted in BJJ: Kids Belt Promotions in Hayward

Parents often ask us how belt promotions work in kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Karate, taekwondo and other jiu-jitsu academies all do it differently. In this video we explain how kids get stripes and new belts at Mindset Martial Arts & Fitness in Hayward, CA.

Kids Belt Promotions Every Three Months

We hold a kids belt promotion about every three months. All the kids get together, and each child generally receives one stripe on their belt, even if it happens to be their very first day.

What Do Stripes Mean for Kids?

For kids, stripes mark time on the mat more than ability. Think of a tree that grows a new ring every year. After about a year of training, your child will usually receive their next belt.

Competition Team Stripes

Kids on our competition track follow a slightly different path:

• Yellow stripe: your child has been invited into our kids competition class.
• Red stripe: your child has competed in a tournament.

We like competitors to get 15 to 20 tournaments in at white belt before moving up, because the gray belt division is a big jump in difficulty. Instead of a new belt after the fourth stripe, these kids keep earning red stripes until they're seasoned and ready.

Missed a Promotion? Remember to Check In

If your child misses a belt promotion, we hold makeups. Please make sure your child checks in on the tablets every time they come to class. That's how we track attendance, see how each kid is doing, and help keep them motivated to train consistently.
