How to Avoid Injuries in BJJ: Step 1
Starting your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey is exciting, but it’s important to prioritize safety so you can train consistently and avoid unnecessary setbacks. In this three-part video series, we’re breaking down key steps to help you stay injury-free—especially during your early days on the mat.
Step 1: Communicate with Your Coaches
The first step in staying safe is simple, but often overlooked: let your coaches know if you have any current injuries, sensitivities, or past medical issues that could impact your training. This includes anything from tweaked knees and stiff backs to previous surgeries or chronic conditions.
Your coaches are there to help you learn and grow, not to push you into situations that could make an existing problem worse. When they know what you’re dealing with, they can offer modifications, assign appropriate training partners, and keep an eye out during live rolling or drilling.
Watch the short video above for a quick reminder of why this step matters, and stay tuned for steps two and three in the series!
