Using the Gi to Set Up a Powerful Double Leg Takedown

In our latest video, we break down a classic wrestling technique with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu twist: the double leg takedown—gi-style.

When you're wearing the gi, you have tools at your disposal that aren’t available in no-gi or traditional wrestling. In this drill, we start by using a strong grip on the lapel and the sleeve. This grip allows us to disrupt our training partner's posture and balance with a shake or snap-pull motion. That little shake isn’t just for show—it gets them reacting, shifts their weight, and opens up the window to shoot.

Once the posture is broken and they’re off balance, that’s our cue to level change and shoot in deep for the double leg. As we drive through, we don’t just aim to lift—we use our head position to steer, spin, and finish the takedown cleanly. The head acts like a steering wheel while we control both legs, guiding our partner to the mat with control and precision.

This is a great example of how traditional wrestling techniques can be adapted and enhanced in the context of gi jiu-jitsu. The grips give you a unique way to set up your shot, and when you time it right, it feels effortless.

Check out the video to see the details in action. Whether you're new to takedowns or looking to tighten up your gi game, this one's worth drilling.
